A little about SPAM…

Spam is email that you don’t want and is usually from people trying to sell you stuff. Most people still think that receiving spam is harmless after all if you don’t want to receive the message all you have to do is simply delete messages? No big deal right? Wrong!

Spam IS a big deal for business. Spam messages can introduce viruses into your systems, paralyze your computer systems, gobble up disk storage space, the content is often offensive and worst of all it impacts the productivity of your team – according to the Anti Spam Research Group, “each year spam costs companies $730 in lost productivity for every employee with e-mail” (we could not find similar research for the UK but the UK market closely mirrors the U.S. so we can assume the same sort of effects here – costs in GBP at $1.6 – £1 will be £465/yr. £465 per employee lost because of spam!).

Having antivirus alone will not stop or prevent you from receiving spam – antiviruses are concerned with detecting and destroying a virus once it has hit your systems. To deal with spam you need to install some sort of spam filtering software at your email servers gateway (where your emails come through before hitting your inbox) thereby tackling the problem at source.

A little about Web Filtering…

Most business owners are happy to allow their staff to use the internet for personal use if it is done in moderation. The problem arises when staff abuse this privilege by spending time on the internet whilst they should be working especially with the prevalence of social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Applying controls on your staff’s use of the internet may be a necessary evil to eliminate staff unproductivity and also stop staff from accessing offensive or “unsafe” sites that may introduce viruses into your system.

We understand that you do not wish to stop your staff from using the internet completely you simply want to restrict their usage of certain sites during certain hours and perhaps restrict patronage to those you deem harmful – the most common means of attacking a business’s security is through web sites. Some harmful sites can hold viruses, scripts that can steal passwords other malware (malicious software) which can be installed without the user even noticing.
